The Events:
Note: Events will be completed in the order listed below. However, we may run the event in "Groups", in which case group 1 will complete max block press while group 2 completes weight over bar. Once both groups finish, we will switch. Then while group 1 does stones of the north, group 2 will do fingal's finger. Once both groups finish, we will switch. Everyone will do the stone carry and load together. Then we will have a mas wrestling tournament LAST, after everything else is over.
Max Block Press
- 60sec to produce a successful lift. You may push, pull, kick, scream, and dance all you want in that 60sec to produce a good lift. If that 60sec expires and you have not produced a good lift, you are out.
- We will take openers during warmups. 3 attempts allowed to reach a top weight. You miss, you’re out.
- Athlete must wait for down command.
- To receive down command, knees must be locked; feet stationary, not staggered, and within shoulder width; hips extended; upright posture; elbows locked; implement must be motionless to demonstrate control. Pressing with a “layback” technique is fine, however posture must be upright at lockout to receive the down command.
- Dropping the implement will result in a “no lift” call. Object must be controlled to the ground. This is not easy with a big rectangular block, but clear effort must be made to control the descent.
- Sleeves, one soft and one hard belt, and wrist wraps are legal. No tacky (if that wasn’t obvious).
Max Height Weight Over Bar
- Athletes will throw a traditional Highland Games weight with one hand over a bar that rises higher each round. Highest throw wins.
- Athletes have 30 seconds to produce a successful lift, if they miss they may grab the implement and try again, as long as they have time left.
- If unsuccessful at any given height, the athlete is at that point eliminated.
- Three heights may be selected. After a successful attempt, athlete must tell the score keeper what their next attempted height will be.
- Increments will go up one foot per round
- Standing throw only; no spinning
- Nothing sticky. Lifting shoes with an elevated heel are fine, but no modified platform shoes are allowed. Kilts ARE allowed ;)
Stones of the North
- When Bill Kazmaier went to Scotland to lift the Inver Stone, the original challenge was simply to hoist to chest height. Kaz, not satisfied with this, took it up to his massive shoulders, and then pressed it overhead. The Stones of the North honor this feat.
- Athlete with have 60sec to load, shoulder, or press an Atlas Stone as many times as possible.
- Loading is worth 1 point. Shouldering the stone is worth 5 points. Pressing the stone is worth 20 points! Most points wins.
- To get the load, you must place the stone on the platform and take hands off to show the load. To get points for shouldering, you must get the stone all the way to one shoulder and take one hand away showing control. To get points for the press, you must show complete control overhead with arms straight, feet square and head under the stone. Do your best to control the stone to the ground, please no dropping or throwing of the stones if at all possible.
- No tacky. No spray tack. No tacky towels. No grip shirts. Nothing remotely sticky. Do it like our ancestors did for thousands of years.
- One soft belt and one hard belt are allowed.
Fingal's Finger
- Athletes will start with hands off the finger, on the go, the athletes will have 60 seconds to produce as many successful “reps” as possible
- Athletes will pick up the finger, “clean” it to their chest, and walk their hands under until it is completely flipped over to the other side, at which point the athlete will run over and try to flip it back
- The finger will start on crash pads/tires, once it is lifted from the tires, a staff member will pull said pad out of the way so that it is not in the way of walking, when the finger is flipped it will land on a pad on the other side
- The pad will be replaced behind you once you pass it if there is the need to drop the finger
- Allowed: Belt, sleeves, wrist wraps, gloves, chalk
- Not allowed: anything sticky
- Weights: There is no possible way to weigh the finger, as the length affects the weight of the lever as it is lifted and walked under. So what this means is, don't ask how much it weighs. We do not know, and you shouldn't care! Unless you come to the gym and train on the exact implement, you're not gonna be able to replicate it anyway!
- What I have listed for weights is the "level" of the finger. Level 1 is its shortest setting (112"). Level 2 is its second length setting (124"), Level 3 is its third length setting (158"), Level 4 is its longest setting (178"), Level 5 is the longest setting (178") with a 45lb steel slug added, and finally level 6 is the longest setting (178") with a 100lb steel slug added!
Stone Carry and Load Medley
- Athletes will have 75 seconds to carry and load a husafell 30 feet, an atlas stone 20 feet and a natural stone 10 feet all over a bar.
- Women will be loading over 44", men will be loading over 48".
- Everyone will be using a Hi-temp Husafell loaded with weights EXCEPT the open 265's and SHWs, they will be using a concrete Husafell.
- Event will be done outside in the grass
- Same rules for stones of the north, nothing sticky.
- Novice, Teen, and masters LW women will not be using a stone of steel and will instead be using a lighter atlas stone.
Mas Wrestling
The original Viking sport! Best described in its simplest form as Seated Tug of War with a stick, a MAS Wrestling tournament will be held among the weight classes. This will a MAS Wrestling tournament! All matches are 2 out of 3, and tournament style will be double-elimination or round robin, depending on the number of competitors. For a full description of the rules, including links to sample videos, click here http://maswrestlingusa.com/mas-wrestling/abridged-mas-wrestling-usa-rules
Tie Breakers
Any ties for will be broken by the winner of the head to head Mas Wrestling match.
KIDS DIVISION
Before you read any further- this is a non-sanctioned division, created for some kids who wanted to come lift rocks and win weapons! With this class being unsanctioned, a Strongman Corporation membership is not required and Strongman Corporation is NOT affiliated and cannot/will not be held liable or accountable for anything that may happen to your child. With that being said- we will, as always, do our best to make sure your kid stays safe. However, it is also on you, the parents, to make sure your kid is reasonably able to perform these events without getting hurt. Please do not sign up your toddler for this and hope for the best. The events will not be the same as the sanctioned classes, but they will go first with the adults. Weights are TBD for all of the events.
The events:
Overhead press medley- Kids will have 60 seconds to complete the following: double dumbbell clean and press, barbell clean and press and a stone clean and press.
Max distance unspunnen stone throw- 3 attempts, furthest distance wins.
Loading medley- Kids will have 60 seconds to load 2 Titan slam balls and 2 natural stones over a 36" bar.
Tire flip- Kids will have 60 seconds to flip a 1200lb tire as many times as they can (Just kidding, it won't be that big)
Stone carry, max distance- Kids will have 60 seconds to carry a stone as far as they can. The course is 50 feet with turns.
Mas wrestling: Paul V Coleslaw 3.0, if you don't know what that means, you will. Link for rules is listed above.
We hope to see you and your kid come out and have a great time! Thanks to the Rev. Matt Holbert for inspiring me to come up with this division!
