Buenos Aires,
Argentina and Venezuela face off in CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying in Buenos Aires in what could be Lionel Messi's last match played in his home country.
Messi confirmed his plan to play in the qualifying after his two-goal performance in a come-from-behind victory for Inter Miami in the Leagues Cup semifinals.
"Yes, it's going to be special, it's going to be a very special match for me because it's the last one of the qualifiers," Messi said. "Afterwards I don't know what will happen, but we are going with that intention."
Argentina and Venezuela last played each other in 2024, a 1-1 draw in the World Cup qualifying.
Argentina sits atop the CONMEBOL table with 35 total points, and already clinched a spot in the 2026 World Cup.
Venezuela, on the other hand, is in 7th place and slated to make the inter-confederation playoffs - a tournament to determine two qualifying spots the 2026 World Cup.
Venezuela, with three games remaining in the qualifying, is four points behind 6th-place Colombia - the cutoff for automatically qualifying for the World Cup. Bolivia is one point behind Venezuela for the inter-confederation playoff spot.
