BEERSTONE Rules (PRO/AM)

General Rules:

  • All athletes must have an active Strongman Corporation membership. This applies to amateurs in the Pro/Am Division. (USS Pros currently are not recognized as Pros for this event and will need to have a Strongman Corp membership along with paying the registration fee)
  • Competition shirts must be worn for every event. If the athlete does not have their contest shirt on, they will not be allowed onto the field.
  • Grip shirts are allowed, but may only be worn under the competition shirt. The only event that Grip Shirts may be allowed by themselves, without being covered, is the Atlas Stones.
  • Athletes are not allowed to wear headphones or earbuds on the contest floor.
  • In the interest of safety to the athlete, wearing earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and other jewelry is strongly discouraged while the athlete is competing.
  • The athlete will not consume alcohol through the day while competing. Safety of all competitors is paramount. There will be plenty of beer and time to drink afterwards.
  • Athletes will respect all equipment. Belligerent, negligent, ignorant, violent, or reckless behavior will not be tolerated. It puts fellow competitors, judges, and spectators at risk.
  • Athletes will respect their judges and event staff. Violent and disruptive behavior (physical or verbal) may result in the athlete being disqualified from the event, or them being removed from the competition all together.
  • If the athlete feels unwell or ill, they will take serious consideration of their symptoms. In the interest of protecting themselves and all others at the contest, if the athlete suspects they may have COVID, they should either withdraw from the contest or get tested and provide a negative test result.
  • As this is a large event, everyone's continued health is paramount. Any athlete that knowingly has COVID and still competes will be subject to bans from future events hosted by Gabe Peña, Alpha Fit, and 5x5 Brewing. Additional evaluation may be taken by Strongman Corp. on the athlete’s ability to participate in future events.
  • All rules and event specifications are subject to change any time at the promoter’s discretion.
  • In the event of a tie at the end of the contest, Judges will do a look-back and break any ties by comparing event wins. If one of the athletes has more 1st place event wins than the other, they win the tie. If a tie cannot be broken by lookback, a mystery tie-breaker event will be used.

Husafell Carry

No Time Limit – MAX DISTANCE.

Course Length – 50 feet.

The athlete will pick from the ground and carry the replica Husafell Stone over a 50 ft course for max distance. There will be line markers at the end of the 50’ course to signify where the athlete will turn around and head back down the course for continued distance. The athlete needs to only break (pass) the line with part of their foot, the whole foot does not need to pass. However, if no part of the athlete’s foot passes the line, they must take another step for the length and turn to be valid. If the athlete doesn’t break the line and turns back, the will be flagged by their judge and must walk back to the line and successfully break it before turning.

Once the athlete drops the stone, they are done and a measurement will be taken. This means that once the athlete picks up the stone, off the ground, their attempt begins.

There is only one exception to this. The stones will begin in a “pick-up” zone. If the athlete picks up the stone and drops it before taking a step, they will be allowed to re-pick the stone. However, if the stone and/or athlete travel even one step, this is their distance, and they will not be allowed to repick.

Equipment negligence will not be tolerated. If at any point the athlete tosses, throws, launches, or hurls the Husafell, they will receive a ZERO on the event.

The athlete must follow the stone down by keeping their hands on it as it touches the ground. If the athlete simply lets go of the stone, they will receive a 10 foot penalty. Furthermore, if the athlete lets the stone go and the stone travels bouncing and careening away from the course, this is considered a launch (as noted above) and the athlete will receive a ZERO.

We know this is a max distance event, and will take that into heavy consideration of the athlete as they near the end of their performance capacity. If the body fails and the athlete loses muscular control of the stone, that’s one thing. But if the athlete knowingly attempts to gain extra distance by hurling a stone, that is an entirely different deal. These calls will be made at the judge’s discretion.

This event is showcasing replica Husafells for the first time in history at a regional US contest. We want this to be as close to traditional as possible. The same respect you would show for the actual stone in Iceland will be shown here.

Equipment allowed/unallowed:

  • Elbow and Knee Sleeves- No double Sleeves, or Sleeve & Wraps combo.
  • Knee wraps will only be allowed if the athlete has a knee condition that demands it. However, the athlete will not be allowed to wear wraps and a sleeve on the same joint.
  • Grip shirts may only be worn under the competition shirt.
  • Grip shorts* not allowed.
  • Wrist wraps allowed.
  • Chalk allowed.
  • Forearm guards (like leather gauntlets or wraps) will be allowed, but they may not have rubber grippers or grip assistance. Forearm guards will be subject to approval by judges.
  • No tacky, spray tacky, or any adhesive assistance allowed.
  • As of right now, no tacky towels are allowed and this is a chalk-only event. However, if after equipment testing the promoter feels appropriate, tacky towels may be allowed. Final confirmation on the use of tacky towels will be made no later than the last week of February.
  • Belts allowed. The athlete may choose to use a soft belt, a hard belt, or a combination of the two. The athlete MAY NOT use a double layer of 2 hard belts or 2 soft belts. (Keep in mind that belts may decrease your ability to maintain a solid grip on the objects)

Log Clean and Press Away

Time Limit – 60 seconds

The athlete will Clean a Log from the ground and PRESS AWAY* as many reps as possible during the allotted 60 second time cap. Press Away means that the athlete needs to only clean the log once, and may continue to press the log without ever having to put it down. Should the athlete need to put the log down, they may re-clean the log as many times as they need to keep pressing out reps in the 60 second time cap.

Cleans are not scored in any way, only successful overhead presses, signified by “DOWN” commands are counted as reps. Judges will give a down command when the athlete has established full control of the log locked out overhead. Elbows and arms must be locked, feet must be parallel, the athlete must be steady and not moving around, and the athlete must be looking at the judge (Down commands will not be given if athletes are looking up, sideways, or anywhere but the judge).

Exact Log diameters to be used by each division are TBA. Assume that light female and teen classes will use a 10” Log, mid-weight classes (male and female) will use 12” Logs, and heavy male classes will use a 13” Log.

  • Grip shorts* allowed.
  • Wrist wraps allowed.
  • Chalk allowed.
  • No tacky, spray tacky, or any adhesive assistance allowed.
  • Belts allowed. The athlete may choose to use a soft belt, a hard belt, or a combination of the two. The athlete MAY NOT use a double layer of 2 hard belts or 2 soft belts.

Keg Toss Series

Time Limit - 60 seconds

The athlete will toss a series of 5 kegs over a raised bar, in order from lightest to heaviest. The bar height for most male classes will be 15’, whereas the female bar height will be 13’.

It is imperative that the athlete looks up at their kegs as they are tossed to verify their trajectory. These are weighted projectiles. Being oblivious to the launched kegs can very well result in serious injury from a keg coming down ontop of the competitor.

Kegs will be lined up approximately 10’ away from the overhead bar. Athlete will start with one arm touching the side vertical uprights. At the “GO” signal, the athlete will run from the start position to the first keg and begin tossing their series. The athlete may toss the keg from where it lies, or they may carry it closer to the overhead bar, to a position of their liking.

The keg that the athlete is throwing over must clear the bar to be counted as a successful toss. If the keg does not make it over the bar, or if the keg dances on the edge and falls back towards the athlete, the athlete must retrieve the keg and reattempt the toss. If the athlete unsuccessfully completes a keg and moves onto the next one, any subsequent tosses that are done following the incomplete keg toss, do not count.

Time will stop as soon as the last keg clears the bar, not when it hits the ground. If the athlete does not complete the series, a score of completed kegs will be taken. There will be no split times on this event for completed kegs.

Equipment allowed/unallowed:

  • Elbow and Knee Sleeves- No double Sleeves.
  • Knee wraps not allowed.
  • Wrist wraps allowed.
  • Chalk allowed.
  • Gloves allowed, if desired.
  • No tacky, spray tacky, or any adhesive assistance allowed.
  • Belts allowed. The athlete may choose to use a soft belt, a hard belt, or a combination of the two. The athlete MAY NOT use a double layer of 2 hard belts or 2 soft belts.

Military Vehicle Harnessed Truck Pull

Time Limit – 60 seconds.

Course Length – 50 feet.

The athlete will be harnessed to a large military truck. Facing away from the vehicle, the athlete will have a lead rope in front of them, anchored to a fixed point at the end of the course. Using a combination of lower and upper body power, the athlete will pull the vehicle down the 50 ft course for fastest time. If the athlete cannot complete the course, they will be given a measurement as a score.

The pulling surface is level asphalt. Hiking shoes, rock climbing shoes, or any footwear with high-traction soles is advised.

As March tends to have some rainfall for the Rio Grande Valley, weather will be taken into account with this particular event. Should there be any moisture in the forecast, be prepared for this event to be moved to a time of day that gives all competitors a window of fair pulling conditions. Regardless, it is imperative that your footwear has high traction. These are very heavy vehicles.

  • Wrist wraps and arm/leg cuffs allowed, if desired.
  • Gloves allowed, if desired.
  • Chalk allowed.
  • No tacky, spray tacky, or any adhesive assistance allowed.
  • Belts allowed, if desired. However, know that a belt may get in the way of your pulling harness. Use at your discretion. The athlete may choose to use a soft belt, a hard belt, or a combination of the two. The athlete MAY NOT use a double layer of 2 hard belts or 2 soft belts.

Atlas Stone Series

Time Limit – 60 seconds

This event will be ran like the Giants Live Castle Stones. The athlete will load a series of 5 stones to platforms of varying heights, with the lightest stone being loaded to the highest platform and the heaviest stone loaded to the lowest platform. Athlete will start at the side-end of the loading platform adjacent to the lowest platform for the heavy stone. At the “GO” signal, athlete will run over to the light stone at the high platform and begin their loading series.

Stones will be directly in front of the platforms and will not require a carry. There will be a indentation in the middle of each platform to catch the stone. It is the athlete’s responsibility to ensure that the stone is set and locked into the platform before moving onto the next stone. If the Stone rolls off the platform, the athlete must retrieve it and successfully load it before moving onto the next one. Time will stop once the athlete loads the final stone, removes their hands from it, and the stone arrests in place.

There will be no split times taken on this event.

Equipment allowed/unallowed:

  • This is the only event where you may wear a Grip Shirt without having your contest shirt over it. This is a Strongman Corporation sanctioned event. USS Grip shirts are not allowed to be worn without the BEERSTONE contest shirt over it.
  • Elbow and Knee Sleeves- No double Sleeves, or Sleeve & Wraps combo.
  • Knee wraps will only be allowed if the athlete has a knee condition that demands it. However, the athlete will not be allowed to wear wraps and a sleeve on the same joint.
  • No wrist wraps.
  • Chalk allowed, if desired.
  • Tacky, spray tacky, and tacky towels allowed.
  • Stone Sleeves, gauntlets, and forearm protectors allowed (even if they have rubber grippers).
  • Tape wraps on arms allowed.
  • Grip shorts* allowed.
  • Belts allowed. The athlete may choose to use a soft belt, a hard belt, or a combination of the two. The athlete MAY NOT use a double layer of 2 hard belts or 2 soft belts. (Keep in mind that certain belts may hinder your ability to keep the stones gripping to your trunk)

There will be a tacky clean up station for removal of all tacky and tape wraps. No athletes will be allowed to remove tacky or clean up in venue restrooms.
