Midwest Stone Fest

Lawrence, KS

The 2nd Annual Midwest Stone Fest presented by Per Aspera Strength will take place at the Free State Highland Games!

Test your grit, strength, and technique in three raw, natural Stonelifting events, facing off against Strongmen/Strongwomen and Highlanders alike.

The action kicks off midday, between the amateur and pro Highland Games sessions. Our goal is to have athletes competing in both Highland Games and Stonelifting.  (Sign up for the Free State Highland Games separately at www.heavyathlete.com/

START TIME:  ~2PM (subject to change slightly based on the morning Highland Games. Come early and watch the throws, or join the action!)

No weight classes, no weigh ins. Men's and Women's divisions.

Dry Chalk only:  NO TACKY,  NO GLOVES, NO LIQUID CHALK, NO TACKY TOWELS

All belts are allowed (lever, soft, etc.). Only one belt can be worn at a time.

EVENT 1:  Stone Lift for Points

A series of natural stones will be lined up in order of ascending weight.  Athlete will choose 3 stones and score points based on the following system:

Breaking the stone off the ground (aka "wind beneath the stone) = 1 POINT

Lapping the stone= 2 POINTS

Standing up, locked out with the stone at WAIST level (below navel)= 3 POINTS

Standing up, locked out with the stone at CHEST level (above navel) = 5 POINTS

Shouldering the stone, showing control with 1 arm out = 10 POINTS

Points will be multiplied times the weight of each stone for a final score.  1 drop is allowed per stone.  On the second drop, the athletes attempt is over.

EVENT 2:  Steinstossen

Steinstossen (translated to 'stone throwing' in English) is the Swiss variant of stone put, throwing a heavy stone overhead using both arms for the longest distance.  Practiced among the alpine population since prehistoric times, it is recorded to have taken place in the 13th century.

Athlete will have 3 attempts to throw a natural stone stone from overhead in a standing position.  A running start is allowed (and recommended).  The stone must be over the athletes head at the time the running start begins.

If the athlete steps over the fault-line, their attempt is fouled.  Score will be the athletes farthest attempt.

EVENT 3: "Sticks and Stones" Front Carry Medley

60-second time cap

2 heavy stones and 1 heavy log (with bark removed) on a 30 ft course.

Athlete will have 60 seconds to carry all 3 objects from one side of the course to the other.

Front carry only, the stones/logs can NOT be shoulder carried.

Can be carried in any order.
