Power in the Pines V
$100
Flagstaff, AZ
The original Northern Arizona Strong(wo)man competition returns to Flagstaff on June 22nd, 2024 for its 5th consecutive year!
We look forward to delivering the same quality you've come to expect from competitions past while bringing some new things to the table. The competition will begin with an introduction/rules meeting at 8:30am on the competition day with lifting starting at 9:00am. The first event will be the Max Axle Clean and Press run in a powerlifting style format with 3-4 flights, with the first flight warming up until the 9:00am mark and subsequent flights warming up while the prior flight is going. Athletes will then be split into 3 groups and do the middle three events (Car Deadlift, Farmers Walk, and Yoke Challenge) in our rotating format as it has in years past (Group rotations below). We will all come back together for the Conan's Wheel event and conclude with our awards ceremony. Flights and groups will be sent out 2 weeks prior to the competition.
Interested in being a part of the event but don't want to compete? We're looking for 10-15 volunteers to help out, just send me a message with your name a phone number, we'd appreciate it greatly!
Weigh-ins Information:
Weigh-ins will be held at New Roots on June 21st from 9:00am-11:00am and 5:00-7:00 pm. Day of weigh-ins are available by appointment only, so make sure to message me ahead of time if you'd rather do so then. There athletes will weigh-in, get the competition shirts, give their axle openers, get their yoke and Conan's heights, and sign a few posters.
Spectators:
Spectators will be required to pay $10 for a wristband at the door, children 12 and under are free! We welcome as many spectators as you'd like to bring, make sure to bring your own chair!
Max Axle Clean and Press:
The Max Axle Clean and Press event will be organized in a powerlifting style: three attempts (an opener, second, and third), you call the attempts (minimum of 45lbs, 5lbs increments only). Athletes will clean the axle from standard plate height through any means necessary without supporting the weight on any supportive equipment (i.e. no belt cleans) and press the bar overhead in whichever style they choose. Athletes will be given the down signal for a good lift when the bar is locked out overhead under control with feet parallel. Athletes will have 60 seconds to complete their attempt from “platform ready” being called. Two attempts will be allowed during this time frame. Athletes must show control on the way down, any dropping directly from overhead or intentional slamming will result in a 'no lift' on that attempt if the judge deems it necessary, weight can be reattempted if missed as long as it does not violate the 2 attempt in the minute rule.
Equipment Allowed: Chalk, Belt (1 hard belt and 1 soft belt allowed), wrist wraps, knee sleeves, elbow sleeves, elbow cuffs (1 sleeve/cuff allowed per joint), grip shirt.
Equipment Not Allowed: Tacky, straps of any kind, suits of any kind.
Car Deadlift for Reps:
Athletes will have 60 seconds to deadlift the car as many times as possible from the "start" command with both "down" and "up" commands to ensure no touch and go reps are allowed and to make it clear to the athlete when a rep counts. The "down" command will be given when the athlete has stood up with back, hips, and knees locked out, the "up" command will be given when the car deadlift frame is motionless on the block ("up" command will not be given for the first rep, as it is replaced with the "start" command). Athletes will be given time prior to the "start" command to strap in.
Equipment Allowed: Chalk, Belt (1 hard belt and 1 soft belt allowed), wrist wraps, knee sleeves, (1 sleeve allowed per joint), standard or olympic style straps.
Equipment Not Allowed: Tacky, Figure 8 Straps, suits of any kind.
Farmers Walk for Max Distance:
Athletes will be given 75 seconds to pick up and carry the farmers implements as far as possible with only 1 drop allowed with turns at 50 feet. Athletes will pick up the farmers, carry them 50 feet, turn around a cone, carry them 50 feet back, turn, etc. until 75 seconds have elapsed or upon dropping the implements a 2nd time. Athletes must go around the cone on each pass (i.e. the athlete cannot use their one drop at the 50 foot marker, turn around, and walk it back that way). An excessive sliding/dragging penalty will be given for any athlete that does so and will result in a 10 foot deduction from final distance (up to judge's discretion for its implementation). Athletes will be allowed to start with hands on and grip set on the implements as long as the implements remain fully in contact with the ground.
Equipment Allowed: Chalk, Belt (1 hard belt and 1 soft belt allowed), wrist wraps, knee sleeves, (1 sleeve allowed per joint).
Equipment Not Allowed: Tacky, straps of any kind, suits of any kind.
Yoke Challenge:
Athletes will be given the choice between 3 weight options, a light, heavier, and heaviest option, which will be indicated at the conclusion of the warm up period. Athletes will have 45 seconds to move the yoke 30 feet, 1 drop allowed, with the heaviest weight and fastest time deciding the winner of the event. The attempt will end when the front of the yoke crosses the 30 foot line, 45 seconds have elapsed, or upon the 2nd drop. Distances will only be taken for the lightest option, an incomplete run of the heavier or heaviest option will result in a zero. Athletes will be allowed to start under the yoke as long as the implement remains fully in contact with the ground.
Equipment Allowed: Chalk, Belt (1 hard belt and 1 soft belt allowed), knee sleeves (1 sleeve allowed per joint) grip shirt.
Equipment Not Allowed: Tacky, suits of any kind.
Conan's Wheel:
Athletes will be given 60 seconds to pick up the implement in the crooks of their elbows and go as far/as many degrees as possible. The attempt will conclude after 60 seconds have elapsed or upon the implement touching the ground. The weights listed is the weight added to the implement, not weight in the arms. If the athlete continues to walk after the time is up or after the judge calls contact with the floor, the distance will be approximated from where the implement was when the event was finished.
Equipment Allowed: Chalk, Belt (1 hard belt and 1 soft belt allowed), wrist wraps, knee sleeves, elbow sleeves, elbow cuffs (1 sleeve/cuff allowed per joint), grip shirt.
Equipment Not Allowed: Tacky, straps of any kind, suits of any kind.

Tie-Breaker Viking Press:
In the event of a tie for a podium spot, prior to the awards ceremony athletes will compete in a Viking Press for max reps in 60 seconds. Athletes will stand up with the implement prior to the time start, athletes will be given the "start" command and will press away in a strict or push press fashion, no double dipping (defined as rebending the knees after the initiation of the press/leg drive). The event will conclude when 60 seconds have elapsed or when the implement/weight carriage touches the ground. The weight will be 1/2 of the weight used for the Conan's Wheel for the given weight class. The athletes order will be determined based off of a coin toss called by the judge.
If you have any questions or need any clarification, send an email or text me with the information provided with your name and question(s). We look forward to seeing everyone there!
