Revenge of the Strong(Wo)men

Tomball, TX

Welcome to Rise Gym’s 2nd and even bigger Strongman event!

This event is designed to be a MEDIUM skill, local-level event to build the Houston strongman community! Beginners and athletes from other sports are more than welcome!!!

We are running it back with more lifting, over 10 vendors, and more EXCITEMENT! This time we will be at the NEW Rise Athletic Center meaning it will be 100% indoors!

Your sign up includes a free event shirt with your nickname or last name on the back! Extra shirts are available with your name for $25 but must let me know to preorder it. You must email or DM me your shirt nickname or I’ll default to your last name!

Late sign ups after 1/6 are allowed but will be much more expensive to rush order your shirt!

Sign up if you're:

-A total lifting beginner who has some time to train

-A cross athletes who wants to try strongman (powerlifters, crossfitters, college/HS sports).

-A strongman athlete who isn't quite ready for a full-on, Open, sanctioned event weights, or you've been out of the game for a while (2+ years)

Do not sign up if:

-You have ever podiumed (top 3) an Open sanctioned strongman event (novice comps don't count for this rule) (If you were 2nd out of 2 or 3rd out of 3 you should be okay).

-You have competed in 5+ shows in the past 3 years.

-if you've been 2+ years out of strongman that’s fine

^Please don’t be that guy/girl. Don’t use this event as an easy win against under-experienced competitors. If the weights look too easy to you, DON‘T SIGN UP. Reach out to me if you aren’t sure.

-Master's is reserved for ages 45 and up.

*The earliest to sign up gets to go LAST on the first 3 events. This is a HUGE advantage to scope your competition. Don't hesitate to sign up or you may have to be first!*

Trophies

We don’t mess around with Trophies!!! We are coming at you with 100% custom trophies and medals. Top three of ea class will receive a medal, growing in size to show your placing. The 3 males and females who perform best with the weights AND the crowd will get the big custom trophies!! I’m so hyped for these!!

Besides performance, we will also have 6 Rise Together trophies for who had showed the best story, sportsmanship, and heart. You can be last place and still earn this!

Walk out Music

OHHH YEAHHH on event 5 will have walk out music! Strongman is a show right!?! Please send me your song of choice or write it during your check in. All songs will use the censored version! We are shooting for PG-13, if your song is Rated R (or worse) even with the clean version, it won’t be allowed. I will use YouTube premium so make sure it’s on there.

You will have up to 30” from when your song starts to exit our custom tunnel then do whatever you want before setting up on your first sandbag. The sandbag event will then be 60”.  Please let me know if you have epilepsy or don't want fog beforehand. Let me know if you want me to start at a certain time of the song (ex start at 1:12).

Timing

We are going to keep a tight schedule!

Weigh ins:

you MUST weigh in to qualify for lower weight classes. If you miss weigh ins you'll only be able to join SHW out of fairness for lighter athletes who did weigh in. If you are a Super HW or Masters you STILL DO have to weigh in as this may be a tiebreaker.

If you do not make weight that is fine, you’ll just be with the heavier weight class

at Rise gym 8am-10pm 1/19/24. QUICK weigh ins allowed morning of, WELL BEFORE 8:15 rules meeting at 7:15-7:45. If you show up at rules meeting without a needed weigh in, your spot may be forfeited.

General Rules

  • Being late to an event will result in a ZERO for that event
  • Shoes must be worn during all lifting
  • It is the athlete's responsibility to have implements cleaned up if their body fluids get on them.
  • Any disrespect for equipment, gym, competitors, or staff/volunteers may result in disqualification
  • This is a family friendly event. Please be amped up, but excessive vulgarity will result in a warning, then disqualification.
  • Bring some positive, fun, and competitive energy!

1. Keg Overhead Medley

  • A test of Strength and Stability!
  • athlete will have 60” to lift 3 kegs in ascending weight overhead
  • start hands OFF the implements
  • athlete can lift the keg any way they see fit. This is strongman, just get it up!
  • The judge must give a “DOWN” command to complete each rep. The judge will only give this if the athlete shows complete control of the weight overhead while elbows/knees are straight, feet parallel, and feet planted. If you lower the weight without this command the judge will yell “NO REP” and you will need to retry the same keg. Judges will be STRICT so master your lockout!
  • Athlete must show some care of landing of keg. Athlete may either bring keg to chest level and drop onto crash pad, or they quickly guide it overhead onto crash pad. Won't be too picky on this, just show you respect the equipment.
  • women will have a combo of short “pony” and skinny kegs. Men will use full sized kegs
  • BEWARE: the lighter kegs (50 and 100) are filled with water and will slosh around. Train your stability!
  • split times will be taken

Equipment Allowed:

Chalk, knee sleeves, elbow sleeves, wrist wraps, grip shirts, olympic shoes, 1 soft belt and 1 hard belt.

2. Odd Object Carry

  • A test of Endurance and Speed!
  • athlete will have a 60” time limit to complete event
  • athlete may start hands ON duck walk
  • On ”Go” athlete must pick and carry duck walk from floor to finish line where you can throw it on a crash pad (judge will say ”NO GOOD!” if it’s not past line at drop.)
  • athlete will then run back, pick, and carry the keg implement past the 35 ft line and throw that one on the crash pad
  • athlete will repeat with their hussafel 35 ft. Athlete should race THROUGH the line. Once past the line timer will stop. The athlete then needs to slow down and follow volunteers commands to gently place down the hussafel. This implement needs to be lowered after event is finished so the weights don't fly out the top.
  • the crash pads and volunteer will be set up at end of line. Throw and go the duck walk and keg but please aim for the crash pad.
  • as always: penalties for sliding implement into line or disrespecting the hussafel per judge's discretion
  • unlimited drops for all implements.
  • split times will be taken

Equipment Allowed:

Chalk, grip shirt, knee sleeves, elbow sleeves, wrist wraps, 1 soft belt and 1 hard belt.

3. Sandbag Toss Over Bar

  • A test of Technique and Proficiency!
  • athlete will start hand on yoke.
  • they will have a 60” time limit upon “Go!” to throw 3 sandbags placed 10 ft away of ascending weight over bar.
  • if a sandbag is missed, athlete must run and return sandbag to FRONT of yoke for their retry. Don't miss! Judge will yell “NO GOOD!” if bag is missed
  • bar height will be 12 ft F, 15 ft M
  • split times will be taken

Equipment Allowed:

Chalk, knee sleeves, elbow sleeves, wrist wraps, 1 soft belt and 1 hard belt.

4. Axle Bar Hold Head to Head

  • A test of Grit and Determination!
  • placing order will be reorganized based on current scoring so 2 athletes will compete with their direct competition.
  • the two athletes must stand face to face. Any psychological strategy is welcome (no profanity)
  • they will deadlift axle (no knurling) of same weight and hold with any grip/technique as long as possible. You'll have separate, independent timers if you don't deadlift it at the same time. Time starts when you're locked out and stops when bar hits ground.
  • if athlete bends knees (to rest bar on thighs) they will be given a warning, then time will end if happens again
  • You can jump the bar to change your grip in air, but bar must never rest on belly, thighs, ect or will get a warning.
  • slamming bar disrespectfully will result in time penalty per judge's discretion. If you truly give it your all and your grip gives out, that is okay (and encouraged!).
  • If your opponent goes down, keep holding! You still need to beat everyone else!

Equipment Allowed:

Chalk, knee sleeves, elbow sleeves, 1 soft belt and 1 hard belt. NO STRAPS NO GLOVES ;)

5. Sandbag to Shoulder Showstopper

  • A test of Power and Showmanship!
  • all sandbags will be in a line. They range from 50 lbs to 300 lbs and have 25 lb jumps between them.
  • athlete is allowed 30” to walk out of tunnel and hype up crowd to their walk out music, then they will set up hands OFF on sandbag of their choice
  • on ”Go” athlete will be free to shoulder ANY sandbags they choose in ANY order.
  • Athlete must wait for judge’s ”DOWN!” Command to score points for each sandbag. This call will be given if athlete shows control of sandbag, feet parallel, knees locked out, on one shoulder with only one arm contacting it and at least 50% superior of shoulder. Judges will call “NO REP” if bag is dropped before command. You can repeat attempts if you get no rep
  • Females can score TWICE per bag. Males can only score ONCE per bag.
  • Total tonnage in 60" time limit will win event. Choose your strategy wisely…
  • tiebreaker for this event will be heaviest bag lifted.

Equipment Allowed:

Chalk, grip shirt encouraged, knee sleeves, elbow sleeves, 1 soft belt and 1 hard belt.

Please follow @Rise_of_the_Strongmen for updates! I will make videos detailing each event and give shoutouts to competitors who sign up!

*Split time explanation for first 3 events: think of this a tiebreaker. We will time every implement you complete and use this for scoring. Example: you and your opponent can only lift the first two kegs. You both fail the third. But you got the second keg in 20”, your opponent got the second in 40”. Your score is 2+20” and your opponent is 2+40”. you win for shorter time on the first two kegs. But if another opponent get all three kegs in 50“ they will score 3+50”, they will get 1st place since points trump time.
