Wheaton, IL

The Warpath Strength Skull Smash Challenge II will take place on Saturday, August 6, at Midwest Strength + Performance in Wheaton, IL, and will feature five events:

  1. Max Log Press
  2. Max Farmers Handle Deadlift
  3. Conan's Wheel
  4. Yoke/Sandbag Medley
  5. Anvil Hold (Max Time)

The preliminary weight matrix is complete, but a detailed description of each event with the rules will be updated by the end of April 2022. All weights are subject to change at any time per the discretion of the promoter up to and including the day of the competition.

Skull Smash is the title sponsor for this event and will generously provide the winner of each division with a bottle of their ammonia inhalant as a prize.

SPECTATOR INFORMATION

There will be a $10 admission fee for all spectators ages 13 and older. Children under 12 will be admitted for free. This entry fee will be CASH ONLY at the door on the day of the competition. There will not be any advanced ticket sales.

PARKING INFORMATION (PLEASE READ!)

Midwest Strength and Performance has a relatively small parking lot. It will fill up fast.

PLEASE DO NOT PARK IN THE PARKING LOT OF DuPAGE VACUUM, which is located adjacent to the gym (on the west side).

The good news is that there is a lot parking available in the lot of a vacant, out-of-business auto dealership just to the west of the gym with a ton of parking spaces. This lot is located just west of DuPage Vacuum. Remember, please DO NOT park in the lot for DuPage Vacuum. Instead, please park in the lot of the old car dealership.

WEIGH-INS

All competitors MUST weigh-in and complete their check-in before 9 a.m. on Saturday, August 6. If you show up after 9 a.m., you will not be allowed to compete. Please be respectful of the promoter and staff and DO NOT show up at the last minute.

There will be weigh-ins on Friday, August 5, from 9-10 a.m. and from 5-6 p.m. at Midwest Strength and Performance in Wheaton, IL.

There will also be weigh-ins from 8-9 a.m. on Saturday, August 6 (the morning of the competition).

All competitors must have a current United States Strongman membership in order to be allowed to compete.

WARPATH STRENGTH SKULL SMASH CHALLENGE EVENT RULES (TBD)

There will be a brief rules meeting on the day of the competition BEFORE each event. The first rules meeting for the Max Log Press will be at 9:30 a.m. followed by a group photograph.

Max Log Press

  • Each athlete will have three attempts to clean and press a log for a one-rep max.
  • Weight jumps will be done "auction style" where the judge will call out the weight and competitors will line up to take their attempt at that weight. Weights will increase in 10# increments.
  • There will be three lanes. The opening weights for each lane are as follows:
    • Lane 1: 70# (Novice LW/HW Women, Masters Women, HW Women, Teen Men, Novice LW Men)
    • Lane 2: 180# (Novice HW Men, LW Men, MW Men)
    • Lane 3: 185# (Masters LW/HW Men, HW/SHW Men)
  • Once the judge gives the "Lift" command, athletes will have :60s for the attempt.
  • The judge will give a "Down" command once the athlete demonstrates control of the log, the feet are not moving and his/her elbows are locked out.
  • If an athlete misses an attempt, the Wessels Rule will apply and the athlete will not be given any additional attempts. So, please be strategic about the weight of your opening attempt. If you miss your opener, you will receive a zero for the event.
  • Athletes will be required to provide an opening attempt weight at the time they weigh-in.
  • Equipment allowed: Belt, knee and elbow sleeves, wrist wraps, chalk. BELTS MUST BE WORN WITH BUCKLES IN THE BACK.
  • Equipment NOT allowed: No grip shirts, no gloves and absolutely no tacky of any kind (not from a jar, no spray, no towels, no tape).
  • Dropping the log from overhead will result in a zero for the event and possibly (very likely) expulsion from the competition. Please respect the equipment.

Max Farmers Handle Deadlift

  • Each athlete will have three attempts to complete a successful deadlift for a one-rep max using a pair of farmers handles.
  • Weight jumps will be done "auction style" where the judge will call out the weight and competitors will line up to take their attempt at that weight. Weights will increase in 20# increments.
  • There will be three lanes. The opening weights for each lane are as follows:
    • Lane 1: 230# (Novice LW/HW Women, Masters Women, HW Women, Teen Men, Novice LW Men)
    • Lane 2: 400# (Novice HW Men, LW Men, MW Men)
    • Lane 3: 420# (Masters LW/HW Men, HW/SHW Men)
    • The weights listed are the total weight of BOTH handles, NOT each individual handle.
  • If an athlete misses an attempt, the Wessels Rule will apply and the athlete will not be given any additional attempts so please be strategic about the weight of your opening attempt. If you miss your opener, you will receive a zero for the event.
  • There will be a :60s time limit per attempt and athletes will NOT be allowed to strap in until the judge gives the "Lift" command, at which time you may strap in to each handle.
  • Athletes must wait for the “Down” command for a successful rep to be counted. If the handles are dropped without the athlete being given a “down” command, the rep will not be counted.
  • The judge will give a "Down" command once the athlete demonstrates control of the handles and his/her hips and knees are locked out.
  • No barefoot lifting will be allowed. Shoes are not required, but the athletes feet MUST be covered (socks, slippers, etc.).
  • Equipment allowed: Deadlift suits, belt, knee sleeves, knee and wrist wraps, wrist straps, chalk (powder or liquid will be permitted).
  • Equipment NOT allowed: No gloves, hook-grip straps and absolutely NO tacky of any kind (not from a jar, no spray, no towels, no tape).

Conan's Wheel

  • Once the judge gives the "Go" command, athletes will lift the crossbar of the Conan's Wheel and carry the implement in a circle (clockwise or counter-clockwise) as far as possible. This is a max distance event.
  • One drop within the first three feet is permitted to allow athletes to adjust for stability, but any additional drops outside of the first three feet will end the event.
  • Both a distance AND a time will be recorded for scoring. One complete revolution equals one point. There will be quadrants marked so that an athlete may score quarter points.
  • The athlete who goes the farthest distance will win the event.
  • Athletes who tie for the same distance will be ranked based on the fastest time in which they covered that distance.
  • Equipment allowed: Belts, chalk, elbow and knee sleeves, wrist wraps.
  • Equipment NOT allowed: No gloves, no tacky of any kind (not from a jar, no spray, no towels, no tape).

Yoke/Sandbag Medley

  • Athletes will have one minute to carry a yoke down a 60 foot course, run back to pick up a sandbag and then carry the sandbag back down the course and load it over the yoke.
  • Athletes will have the opportunity to get set under the yoke and then begin as soon as the judge gives the "Go" command.
  • The entire yoke must cross the line at the end of the course before the judge will give the athlete a "Drop" command and allow the athlete to return to the starting line for the sandbag.
  • The sandbag must be carried in front of the body (cradle, bear hug, etc.). No shouldering of the sandbag is allowed.
  • Time will stop as soon as the sandbag is loaded over the crossbar of the yoke and hits the ground.
  • Athletes who complete the course with both implements with the fastest time wins.
  • If an athlete fails to complete the entire course with either the yoke or the sandbag, their distance will be measured.
  • Equipment allowed: Belts, chalk, elbow and knee sleeves, wrist wraps.
  • Equipment NOT allowed: No gloves, no tacky of any kind (not from a jar, no spray, no towels, no tape).

Max Anvil Hold for time

  • Athletes will have one minute to pick and hold a custom-made anvil implement loaded to a set weight for each weight class (see weight matrix for weights).
  • The weights listed on the matrix is the total weight of the anvil, loading pin, carabiner and plates.
  • Athletes are required to grab the implement on the taper (the horn) and lift it until the weights are off the ground.
  • Any contact between the athlete’s hand and the base (non-tapered portion) of the anvil is not allowed. Other than incidental contact, the hand and the implement must not touch the body before the lift is completed. Dragging the hand or anvil up the leg is not allowed.
  • Time will start once the athlete’s arm/elbow is locked out with the anvil/implement, which they will hold for as long as possible.
  • Athletes must fully straighten up (back erect, legs and hips locked out) before time will start, and once standing straight, the athlete will hold the implement for as long as possible. Longest time wins.
  • Equipment allowed: Belt, knee and elbow sleeves, wrist wraps, chalk (you may use powdered or liquid chalk, but no chalk may be applied directly to the implement).
  • Equipment NOT allowed: No gloves, no tape and absolutely no tacky of any kind (not from a jar, no spray, no towels, no tape) will be allowed.

As stated earlier, the complete event descriptions and rules will be posted by the end of April 2022.
